WILLOW CREEK — With peak foliage season 15 months away, a volunteer planning committee has begun organizing Willow Creek’s first dedicated fall festival, targeting October 2026 as the town’s signature autumn event.

The Willow Creek Harvest & Heritage Festival, as it is currently named, will aim to capture a portion of the estimated 3.5 million leaf-peepers who travel through Maine each fall. Despite its position along the Aroostook County foliage corridor, the town has never hosted a coordinated fall event.

“We watch the tour buses roll past on their way to Baxter State Park and the Allagash,” said Eleanor Vance, who convened the planning group. “Those buses have people with wallets. We need to give them a reason to stop.”

Preliminary plans include a farmers’ market featuring Farr Family Farm produce and O’Flaherty’s maple products, live music at the gazebo on Main Street, a pie-baking competition at the General Store, and guided foliage hikes on the Mattawamkeag River Trail.

Maeve O’Donnell, who will oversee the pie competition, said the timing is right. “October in Willow Creek is beautiful. The maples along the river turn fire red. We’ve never marketed that aggressively because we didn’t think of ourselves as a fall destination. That’s changing.”

A steering committee of 12 residents and business owners will meet monthly through the end of 2025. The town has allocated $5,000 in seed funding, with additional sponsorship sought from regional businesses.
