WILLOW CREEK — Deputy Patricia LaFleur of the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office released the spring edition of the weekly police log, and regular readers will find the usual mix of the mundane, the absurd, and the distinctly northern Maine variety.
Highlights from recent weeks:
April 28, 3:14 PM — Caller on Pond Road reported a large rooster “standing in the middle of the road, refusing to move.” Deputy arrived on scene. Rooster relocated to a nearby yard. Animal control notified.
May 2, 8:47 PM — Caller on School Street reported that “someone had moved” their mailbox approximately 30 feet down the road. Deputy observed that recent plowing activity had likely pushed the mailbox. Mailbox returned to original location.
May 7, 11:23 PM — Report of a single-vehicle accident on Route 11 near the Farr Road intersection. Driver struck a moose. Moose fled the scene, apparently unharmed. Vehicle sustained damage to the front bumper and radiator. No injuries reported.
May 12, 9:05 AM — Caller on Elm Street reported that a neighbor’s dog had “eaten a pair of gardening gloves off the clothesline.” Deputy spoke with the dog’s owner, who agreed to replace the gloves. No further action taken.
May 17, 4:30 PM — Caller at Thorne’s Bend boat launch reported an unattended kayak drifting toward the Willow River bridge. Deputy and Fire Chief Fournier retrieved the kayak, which was found to be unoccupied. Owner located at the general store. Kayak secured.
LaFleur, who has patrolled Willow Creek since 2016, noted that spring brings a consistent uptick in calls as the weather warms.
“People have been inside all winter,” she said. “They emerge, they find things amiss, and I am the person they call. That’s fine — I’d rather they call about a rooster than not call about something serious.”
